Thanks, Paul. I had a truly fun time spending the afternoon and early evening with those guys. They presented as Gloucester boys (and gals) at their finest: irrepressible wit mixed with an excellent sense of humor mixed with true sinewy grit and toughness. If I wasn’t cracking up laughing I was simply struck by their raw hardiness. What a spirited bunch of kids, all with obvious affection and respect for each other. Peter keeps them in line with a few stern barked words laced with good humor and fairness.
I was honestly worried about a couple of those kids: several were shivering uncontrollably on the pole by the second round, and started wrapping themselves in whatever they could find up there — big trash bags, old blankets –on the pole platform.
Wow – fabulous video, Adam..can’t wait to watch the rest. I felt so bad for everyone on Friday night, it was so cold and raw and rainy, we were all freezing down the beach, so could only imagine how cold it was for them, not to mention being all bruised and greased up from the pole. I have such respect for everyone who walks the pole. And I definitely agree with what those kids said at the end of the video!
Thanks for the feedback, Jen. Those are some tough kids, and resourceful, too. Three huddled together inside an soggy old blanket wrapped. The older guys who’ve done this more than once…they wore wetsuits. And one fellow had a bag of clothes – long pants and a sweatshirt – he changed into between rounds. Then he’d prop himself up on a piling, light a cigarette, and take it easy until his turn came again.
