Dog Bar Question From Debe Holland

Debe asks-

Hi Joey

I am new to Gloucester and am  loving learning about the town. GMG has been a great source of info. I am wondering if you have already covered this, or might know someone who could tell me..Why is it called the Dog Bar Breakwater? I know that it was built over the Dog Bar Reef, but why Dog Bar? What does that mean? I am intrigued.

Thanks for your great blog.
Debe

Anyone have an answer for Debe?

    Back in the day before radar the lookout would simulate a dogs bark and the sound would echo back off of solid structures dogs bark dog bar

  2. Kurt Lubbers says:

    I can’t find the answer you are looking for but written on an old plaque in the lighthouse was this;
    “1905 Dog Bar Breakwater officially completed, 11 years in the making when keeper George Bailey walked to the end and lit the white oil lamp”

  3. I believe the Dog Bar Breakwater is named after a great little restaurant located at 65 Main Street that serves locally sourced comfort food and features live music every night of the week. This weekend’s lineup: Fun Bucket – Friday, Joe Mack – Saturday and Ryan Alto and Max Aprans – Sunday. Or maybe George is right.
