Entertainment @ The Topside Grill

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to give you a heads up about the entertainment this weekend… Also come visit the beautiful Kristie & Elizabeth bartending! Two of the best bartenders on the North Shore. Also Ryan will be joining them bringing his great charisma and personality with him!

Tonight: Samantha Farell: 8:00 pm
Sounds like a mix between Norah Jones and Corrine Bailey Rae. Samantha Farrell is a sparkling young singer-songwriter based out of Boston, who has been wowing critics and audiences alike, across the country with her unique mixture of jazz and folk-rock influenced  pop.  Described by national music magazine Relix as possessing “prodigious and undulating vocals that are delivered with rare, swinging passion,” and as a “soulful mix of Van Morrison’s country hospitality, Ella Fitzgerald’s jazzy range and Fiona Apple’s modern honesty,” Farrell has been touring the North east in support of her latest two efforts; Her full length album “Luminous” was produced by the late LeRoi Moore, a founding member and saxophone player for the Dave Matthews Band. “Luminous,” a completely independent release, sky rocketed to #7 on the national pop iTunes charts from it’s formidable grass roots support. Her music has been heard on major network television shows such as “Shark” (NBC), Privileged and One Tree Hill (CW). For more information, find her on the web atwww.samanthafarrell.com

Tomorrow: Tim Cannon: 9:00 pm
With over a decade of songwriting experience,Tim Cannon multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter experiments with genres ranging from retro rock, acoustic, and electric styles. Adding his own flavor of expressive soul with an edge, he plays all of the instruments on his music from bass, drums, all guitars and vocals, unless of course otherwise noted.”I play a wide range of music, lots of styles and I have an expansive list of originals and coversongs to play in virtually any type of venue.Music is my passion and people can tell that I really love what I do.They enjoy being entertained just as enjoy to entertain.I love to walk into a room full of energy and take it higher.” Check Out more at www.timcannon.net

Chickity Check It!- Ysolt Usigan’s Gloucester article has hit the Huffington Post

Ysolt Usigan’s Gloucester article has hit the Huffington Post:

I’ve always wanted an Eat Pray Love adventure of my own. Author Elizabeth Gilbert once told Oprah that your journey can happen right in your own backyard — you don’t have to go far. Although there’s much to be desired about traveling to Italy, India and Indonesia for a year — that’s a dream come true really — let’s get real here… Some of us have jobs, obligations and financial constraints.

But the reality is, I’ve been in a funk and desperately needed a change of scenery. I didn’t care where I went, I just wanted to go somewhere and all I had was a long weekend. So for my personal journey, I traveled to an unlikely place: Gloucester, MA, a quaint fishing town on Cape Ann in Essex Count, MA where films like The Perfect Storm, Mermaids and Grown Ups were once shot. I’ve never been there. I had no expectations. It was the perfect place to regroup, revive and rediscover (myself). Although I didn’t pray (that’s never been my style), I ate, I loved and I found my spirit in four days.

Arian Doud  from Matter Communications the PR firm that was hired by The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce reached out to Ysolt and invited her to visit Gloucester. Then, Tracey at the Bass Rocks hosted Ysolt and her traveling companion for the weekend and Matter provided Ysolt with a pre-set itinerary that included all the local businesses that wound up in her article. It’s a good example of why Matter was hired and the positive attention they’ve brought the city through it’s PR marketing.

Great Pics From Our Fishing Trip Yesterday

Greg Varsey Writes-
Hi Joey,

It’s Greg Vasey from Five Guys, we met when you came to our opening last
Fall. I took my managers out for a charter fishing trip yesterday morning
(just a little thank-you for their hard work) and I got some great shots of
Gloucester Harbor. I figured I’d send these three along.

Thanks Greg

Deb Clarkes “BIZAAR DAZE”

From Debbie Clarke;

Kerry and Mom with their Found "Art Rock"

Here’s Kerry McNally and her Mom in front of my work at the Bazaar. We were so busy I was lucky to get any pics at all. I thought the folk on goodmorning gloucester would enjoy seeing pics from a ‘sales person’s point of view’. There were so many peeps and every now and then, I got to see some of my friends (Loretta and Adara, my friends from Gloucester’s Unitarian Universalist Church).

I would like to thank the readers of gmg that came down to the bazaar to see my artwork, and search for Paul’s ‘rock art’. I know of one other family ‘team’ that printed out directions to locate your rocks. Many folk thought they were supposed to find the rock, have a picture taken to document the event, then move onto the next clue. This might be a future development of your ‘rock art’ project Paul.

Deb Clarke's Art on display

also: I sold three paintings at the Bazaar! (thank you to Richard and Sabine for allowing me to use some of their bazaar ‘real estate’). This was the most financially succesful bazaar for me, as I have been putting my work on Bananas’ sidewalk for several years. Thanks to word of mouth and the shout out by goodmorninggloucester, lots of folk came to see bananas and my work! I generated sales inquiries, networked like crazy, sold a lot of vintage, and had a lot of fun! Thank you to the folk that volunteered on behalf of the Chamber to organize the event.

A Great Interview With Lindsay Crouse Coming Tonight At 6PM

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of talking with and interviewing Lindsay Crouse at Sailor Stan’s.

Lindsay, if you didn’t know has acting credits on Internet Movie Database going all the way back to the 70’s, was nominated for an Academy Award and starred in a film which is one of my favorite films of all times- House of Games with Joe Mantegna.

This interview was one of my favorites out of over 1000 that I’ve done and right up there with The Bobby Bobskill Chronicles (must see for any GMG Fan).

Now if you’ve been following along for the past couple of years you know I have a certain interviewing style in which I like to put my subject at ease and the editing I do usually consists of putting titles, credits and a few key transitions (fades in and out). What I like most about my interviewing style is that I’m not afraid to mess up and point out my glaring mistakes mid-interview. While I could easily edit the mistakes out, the honesty of leaving them in and letting my subject know that I’m consciously going to leave them in lets them know that I’m not trying to take what we do here too seriously and the point is for us to have fun and get the message across.  To that end I think we succeed.

The interview with Lindsay is a classic example of this style and an example of the contrast of how some people who run TV studios will fuss over lighting for 45 minutes and try to control every single element of the interview and end up actually detracting from a great interview. When the subject is so nervous about making everything so technically perfect the message doesn’t resonate nearly as well as our gonzo style of letting it roll -mistakes be damned.

You can take your $10,000 cameras, you can spend 45 minutes on lighting and makeup, you can have a team of editors and dress it up with some crazy post production effects- Give me my $250 Sony HD camera with a tripod and let me roll- it’s gonna be gold baby!

It didn’t hurt that Lindsay is about the least pretentious warm hearted people that you’d ever want to meet.

Our interview yesterday was one of my favorites despite flying coffee creamer cups, diesel trucks passing by and drunken interruptions.

Below is a clip from House of Games, rent it if you can-

and don’t forget to come back tonight at 6

Local Ad Company Makes National Music Video For Guster

My childhood buddy Jonathan Cahill- AKA Abby Joy Cahill’s older brother writes-

Hey Joey,

Some breaking news for you:

Universal Republic Records has chosen Chad Carlberg, owner of Bait & Tackle Ad Company in Gloucester, MA,  and director with Production Blue, to create the new music video for Guster’s new single “Do You Love Me?” Chad Carlberg and Gloucester-based visual artist Jon Sarkin have begun collaboration on the project. Chad and Jon have been friends and have worked on a number of projects together for ten years. Chad and Guster drummer Brian Rosenworcel have been longtime friends as well.
Two months ago, Brian was talking to Chad about needing artwork for a new album (in two weeks!) and still had no artist. Chad suggested Jon Sarkin. Sarkin has work in the private collections of Meryl Streep, Robert DeNiro and Diane Von Furstenberg. He has shown at Diane von Furstenberg, The DeCordova and others (see www.jsarkin.com for more), has been featured in three BBC documnetary films, an ABC Medical Mysteries, articles in GQ, Vanity Fair, Readers Digest, etc. Brian loved the idea, and a few days later the band was on-board and Sarkin was off and running on the album cover and all art for album.
Shortly thereafter, Brian asked Chad to direct one of the 12 songs off the new album for a web video. Chad chose the single “Do You Love Me?” But Brian called back later and recommended picking another song because the single was getting a real budget and would be done only by a director with Universal’s approval. But Chad was up to the challenge and said, “Let me try.” He wrote five treatments, and created a video page for his pitch of demo work. Even though he had Brian in his corner, Brian had no influence over Universal, who held the purse strings.
As it turned out, Universal and the band members loved the idea that Chad pitched using Sarkin as part of the video. This pitch video was based on a test Chad previously made with Sarkin and noted musician, Sten Bowen who also co-directed with Chad on this project.
Under Chad Carlberg’s direction, this is the first major Production Blue project, (Bait & Tackle Ad Company’s new, high-end production partner). Chad is assisted by Emile Doucette, Bait & Tackle’s Technical Director and Tom Papows, Camera Operator.
