Naples Pier 33 Years Later

The first time I stepped foot on this pier I was 9 years old.  My parents sent my sister Felicia (age 8 at the time)  and me on the plane to visit our grandfather Captain Joe and grandmother Felicia.  I remember back then my grandfather would get me up at 5AM to walk down to the pier to go fishing.  It was 33 years ago and I can remember the sounds smells and scene just like it was today.  My memory isn’t all that good but I can remember walking down to the pier from my grandparents apartment just like it was yesterday.

My grandmother Felicia would sit and knit under a palm tree at the foot of the pier on the beach with her girlfriends while Captain Joe would fish for snook, jack and spanish mackerel.

Now every time we go to Naples we walk the pier with my little girls-  Captain Joe and Felicia’s great grandchildren and I remember all over again and we always take that walk right down to the end.

Red Baron Lobster Boat Model At GMHC Gift Shop

Normally I wouldn’t post a picture of a Lobster Boat Model but in this case, this particular lobster boat model looked almost like an exact replica of the Stanley Thomas, Mark Ring’s Lobster Boat.  They sell these models at The GMHC gift shop.

Here’s The Stanley Thomas

Grateful Dead Concert Last Night

grateful-deadWell, it’s 8 a.m. and I should be still asleep. Too bad my internal clock doesn’t know that I got in 6 hours ago! What a night! My first Dead concert! The DCU Center in Worcester was like a time machine set to the 70’s.  We were a stone’s throw from the stage. People of all ages- baby boomers, little kids and everything in between.  A sea of tie dyed shirts.  Huge balloons bounced over the heads of the crowd. A constantly changing halo of lights above us. And the MUSIC! I’ve always loved Grateful Dead stuff, but I never had the opportunity to see them live. What an experience. No one sat for more than a minute during the 3 1/2 concert (45 minute break) dancing to familiar songs . The drum solos, the guitars, the whole night was magic! A big Thank You to my friend, Skip, for the invite!         —Sharon

Entrance To Saunders Mansion Section Of Sawyer Free Library

If you compare this recent picture of the entranceway of The Saunders Mansion section of The Sawyer Free Library with the old photo from The Sawyer Free Library website, you will see that originally there was a tower which stood atop this entranceway. In the picture below the tower is in the left of the picture on the Middle Street side, not the Dale Avenue side.  The tower has since been taken down.
