Walker Creek Furniture Table With Milk Wash Finish

How Walker Creek furniture is made
We use mortise-and-tenon joinery instead of dowels, and smooth our boards with a hand plane rather than a belt sander. We use only solid wood, no chip-board or veneer. While most furniture is finished with a sprayed-on polyurethane or colored lacquer, we finish every piece by hand using linseed oil, shellac and milk paint, just like 18th century furniture, so the surface feels as good as it looks. State Fish Pier

Many days you can drive by the State Fish Piere on a beautiful day and the boats will be tied to the pier.  10-15 years ago you never would have seen boats tied up on such beautiful days.  The guys would be out fishing.

Between Federal Regulations, and an aging fleet of skippers you see this more and more.  We have a handful of great young skippers coming up but it is but a handful.  It’s going to be scary in another ten years when the last of the big generation of skippers are retired and the permits that they fish are gobbled up and consolidated.  This huge harbor under the current regulations will have great difficulty supporting such a contracted industrial base.

Gorton-Pew Salt Cod Box

Here is another relic from Gloucester Fishing Industry Past,  An Old Gorton-Pew Salt Cod Wood Box.  I wonder if this box which now resides at Ron Gilson’s house ever spent time at our dock which was part of the Gorton-Pew Fisheries before it was Captain Joe and Sons property.  Part II of my interview with Ron Gilson from his house comes at 8:00AM today.
