Beautiful Industry- Blynman Canal Bridgehouse Controls

It’s unreal that this control panel is close to a hundred years old and still gets the job done.  I bet if it was replaced by some new equipment that the new equipment would break down every 5 years or so and have to be replaced.   They just don’t make stuff like they used to.

    How does the large span control (the large chrome handle with the wooden handle knob) work? Does the bridge tender have to spin this lever multiple times to raise and lower the span? That’s what that lever looks like it was designed for. Yet, the raised/lower labels seem to indicate that it is more positional like the smaller black control for the gates. Hmmmm.
