It is common to find the broken pipe stems on the beach and other places. I have a few that I found along Pavillion Beach over the years and I found a stem in a creek bed off of Woodbury Street in Lanesville. The stems were actually quite long, 10-12 inches or more and they would taper. Dave has a good find there. From my brief search, these pipes were common from the mid 1700s up through the late 1800s. They were popular in Europe.
